| Eh (high) up: Cook-inspired Yorkshire astronaut bound for Space Station | And The Weird Fish Keep Coming | Yorkshire Water: Oops, You Did It Again | |
| from The Whitby Independent | from The Whitby Independent | from The Whitby Independent | |
When the Space Shuttle launches on Sunday the North Yorkshire coast will have its very own son aboard as Nicholas Patrick becomes the highest-flying Yorkshireman ever.
And like many an explorer before him, Astronaut Patrick was inpired by another famous son of Yorkshire, James Cook. In a neat piece of exploration synchronicity, he will be making his own voyage of discovery on the shuttle Endeavour, named after the Whitby-built Bark on which Cook made his first circumnavigation.

Thanks to our correspondent for the latest local exotic fish find: a 3 foot long sunfish found on Skinningrove beach. OK, it’s not Whitby, but we can’t blame this Mola mola for landing up at Skinningrove: these fish are usually found in tropical or temperate waters and, according to a sunfish expert at the University of Berkley prolonged exposure to cold water can lead to sunfish ‘disorientation and death’. Had this sunfish not had its brains addled by an unseasonably cold North Sea, it would undoubtedly have had the good taste to hurl itself to its death on Whitby beach.

This morning the lay-by between Hinderwell and Staithes on the A174 was ankle deep in sewage. Sewage is being forced up through the mud of Staithes Harbour bed: the seepage is clearly visible at low tide. Locals suspect that the holding tank on the Cowbar side of Staithes Harbour has been breached,
And a fractured pipe is leaking raw sewage which is pouring across the Cleveland Way between Port Mulgrave and Runswick, eroding the path and contaminating it with sewage. Yorkshire Water claim that the offending pipe is the responsibility of Scarborough Borough Council who are in turn trying to shuffle responsibility off to North Yorkshire County Council. |

A FED-UP Whitby couple had to rush their eight-month-old son to hospital with bronchitis after suffering months of hell with extensive damp in their home.
Tara Anscombe and John Plumb say the damp in their lounge and kitchen has caused little Brandon-Lee to become ill.
The youngster was admitted to Scarborough Hospital with bronchitis in December. |

| Industry Boss Ridicules Fish Claim | Get A Buzz Building A Bee Hotel | Grill The Big Chiefs In The Question Time Hot Seat | |
| from The Whitby Gazette | from The Whitby Gazette | from The Whitby Gazette | |
A CLAIM that people in this country have given up eating fish for a variety of reasons – including that it's too smelly – has been ridiculed by an industry chief in Whitby.
The substance, omega-three, is present in fish oils and the claim was made by Nutrasea, in a report following a survey they carried out with 3,000 people.

CHILDREN visiting The Moors National Park Centre in Danby this half-term can get involved in some hands-on activities including planting summer bulbs and making a bee hotel, bird boxes and feeders.
As 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity, the events have been organised to teach children about some of the plants and animals that can be found in the national park. |
WHITBY Gazette readers are invited to grill the people who make the decisions about the town at a Question Time-style debate.
A special event is being held for residents of Whitby and the surrounding rural area to put forward the questions that matter to them to those in power. |

BREAKING: Elliot Morley, David Chaytor, Jim Devine and Lord Hanningfield charged over expenses fraud. Uddin investigation ongoing, Lord Clarke insufficient evidence "We totally refute any charges that we have committed an offence and we will defend our position robustly. We are confident of our position and have been advised by eminent QCs - our freemason friends in the Judiciary and the Police will see us right, we're sure |
The Prime Mentalist seems to be in complete denial about the financial F***-up his "No more Boom and Bust" management of the economy has produced. |
Whilst all eyes are on the CPS, waiting to see how few they can get away with charging over the expenses fraud – without setting off a full scale riot, it is always instructive to trawl round the rest of the Government web sites and see what else they might wish to slip out under cover of the ‘ooh, aah’ factor. What a peach this is. What an absolute rip roaring disgrace – from a Government that has been queing all week to tell us how right they were to bomb 100,000 Iraquis back to the middle ages because it was a corrupt regime. The Treasury is supporting the restoration of Zimbabwe’s voting rights on the International Monetary Fund. Not just ‘not blocking this move’, not just turning a diplomatic eye in the opposite direction, but actually supporting these murderous bas*ards rehabilitation to full voting rights. |

| BLOG: Make It An Election Issue | BLOG: Free Whitby! | BLOG: World Resources | |

by Free Whitby | by Ranting Siberian Tiger
| Sometime in 2010 before June there will be a general election, clearly many people do not normaly consider local issues at a general election, instead they think of national issues like the economy and public services for example. But there is no reason why local issues cannot influence and determine the outcome of the election of our member of parliament, after all, whoever is elected will be our LOCAL MP. |
Whitby Town Council is a Parish Council, which is perhaps adequate for the administration of a village or hamlet with one bus-shelter and a horse-trough. It is not adequate for Whitby, a town and port of 17,000 residents, and often two or three times as many visitors. We need a Council fit for purpose. Whitby Town Council is to all intents and purposes no Council at all. All decisions about Whitby are being made by Scarborough Borough Council. | Please try to refrain from focussing on Climate Change. The Climategate scandal has only backed up those who believe global warming is a natural occurance, it happens, temperatures rise, deserts are formed, ice caps melt, sea levels rise and then cool down the earth again..ta da..the earth is a perfectly balanced and powerful creature, do not underestimate the fact it can repair itself efficiently.
